At Sociedad Minera Corona S.A we are committed to the strengthening of strategic alliances with the state and the civil society to foster the sustainable development of the communities in which we operate; through the implementation of social programs that serve to value their ancestral capacities and practices in agriculture.
Mina Yauricocha is located within the Scenic Nature Reserve called Nor Yauyos Cochas, 345 km east of Lima, the capital city in the republic of Peru. The farming communities of Laraos, Alis, Tomas, Huancachi and Tinco, all of which are located within the geographic areas of the districts of Laraos, Alis and Tomas in the province of Yauyos, region of Lima, fall within our area of social intervention. We have been carrying out social development programs together with the communities since 2016.
The area of Community Relations at Yauricocha Mine is responsible for the implementation of social and community work. They conduct discussions with local communities and coordinate programs focused on social and environmental intervention; they interact with the local governments, as well as with the provincial governments and the civil society; they establish strategic alliances to foster development, focused on achieving participation among all the stakeholders.
The goal of the project is to convert this community into one of the principal producers of native potato seeds throughout the Nor Yauyos Cochas basin. While improving the local economy, it also ensures that local agricultural customs are preserved and maintained by today’s evaluations, as this is the only community in the area that produces this unique Andean tuber.
The objective is to promote sports and recreational activities, deemed important dynamic complements to aid in the assimilation of healthy practices, and in the social interaction of the students. The program also aims to improve academic competencies as well as providing supplies such as sweaters and back-packs for students in initial, primary and secondary levels of education in the neighboring communities.
In April 2018, Minera Corona, along with authorities and leaders of it’s neighboring communities, implemented the Committee for the Monitoring of the Environment: Yauricocha-CMAPY. This is considered a mechanism whereby community members can be directly involved in monitoring the environmental activities and programs implemented in the mine and mining district. They can also assist in establishing actions for the monitoring of shallow waters in 12 identifiable points in the basin of the Scenic Nature Reserve of Nor Yauyos Cochas. This Committee will collect water samples twice a year every six months to be sent to certified laboratories to be examined, once results are obtained, they are reviewed and discused in community assemblies.
Sociedad Minera Corona initiated this project in July 2018, in the communal farming area called “Unidad Producción de Alpacas Contadera” in the farming community of Tomas, located in the province of Yauyos. This project is focused on the genetic improvement of South American camelid alpacas of the Huacaya race, through the acquisition of studs of high genetic value. This program serves to strengthen this traditional activity as well as develop the community as a principal producer of fiber and meat; the former used in the textile industry, and the latter to contribute to nutritional enhancement, since alpaca meat is free of cholesterol.
The Farming Community of Laraos is located in the district of Laraos, province of Yauyos. It is a tourist community that has inherited an ancestral and mystical culture that dates back to the pre-Inca era, thus having developed one of the greatest wonders in hydraulic engineering as well as architectural edifications, which were the andenes pre-Inca (stepped farming platforms). We have been implementing this project that has several components focused on developing tourist opportunities, a few of which are: the recuperation of such andenes for the farming of ecological products, the setting in value of their landscaping to do adventure sports such as trekking, the development of the gastronomy and their cultural offerings, all of which are the best resources Laraos can offer to draw national and foreign tourists.
With the objective of guaranteeing the sustainability of the mining operations, our social team with engineer Cinthia Vargas as leader, arrived at a consensus with the Farming Community of Laraos by entering an agreement to carry out geological exploration work along a 1,319 hectare portion of land in the sector of Tucumachay. The exploration activities will generate local employment and the consumption of goods and services in the area.
December 2018 Lima: Entering of an Agreement of Easement with CC Laraos
Having invested approximately S/. 280,000, Corona has been fostering the strengthening of diverse entrepreneurial initiatives in the farming community of Alis, located in the Scenic Nature Reserve Nor Yauyos Cochas in the region of Lima, with the purpose of promoting the generation of local employment, thereby increasing the household incomes. The sector that require the most assistance is that of tourism, followed by cattle breeding and small businesses.
The project focuses in the initial application of diverse modules of education in which 58 participants are given information on the possibilities of initiating a business venture bearing in mind their resources: tourism, cattle breeding, cuy (guinea pig) raising, apiculture, community rural tourism and small businesses; then they are selected by sectors, considering their competencies and skills, and in the final stage they are assigned seed capital so they can commence their business activities.
